Understanding Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety is a normal human emotion. When it starts making your decisions for you, it may be time for a different approach.
Everyone feels anxious sometimes. An anxiety disorder is different: the fear is intense, hard to shake, and slowly starts to shape your life — what you avoid, what you check, and what you need in order to feel okay. The good news is that anxiety disorders are among the most treatable mental health conditions.
Anxiety disorders I treat
- Illness (health) anxiety — persistent worry about having or developing a serious illness, often with body checking, searching symptoms online, or seeking reassurance from doctors and loved ones
- Generalized anxiety — constant “what if” worry about many areas of life that feels impossible to switch off
- Social anxiety — intense fear of being judged, embarrassed, or rejected that leads to avoiding or white-knuckling social and work situations
- Panic disorder — sudden waves of intense fear with a racing heart, dizziness, or shortness of breath, and a constant fear of the next attack
- Agoraphobia — fear and avoidance of places or situations where escape or help might feel difficult, such as crowds, transit, stores, or leaving home
- Specific phobias — intense fear of a particular thing or situation, such as flying, driving, needles, heights, vomiting, or animals
Does this sound familiar?
- Avoiding places, people, or activities you used to enjoy
- Seeking reassurance or checking to feel certain everything is okay
- Planning your life around “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios
- Physical symptoms like tension, a racing heart, stomach upset, or trouble sleeping
- Feeling like anxiety is making your world smaller
How treatment works
Anxiety is kept going by avoidance and safety behaviours — the things we do to feel better in the moment that keep fear alive in the long run. I use evidence-based, exposure-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), to help you gradually face what you fear, let go of safety behaviours, and learn through experience that you can handle uncertainty and discomfort.
Treatment is structured, collaborative, and paced. We start with steps that feel challenging but doable, and you stay in control throughout.
What to expect
- Education — how anxiety works and why avoidance keeps it going
- A personalized plan — building gradual exposure steps together
- Practice between sessions — where real, lasting change happens
- Lasting tools — skills to keep anxiety from taking over again
My approach also considers the whole person: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health, collective family histories, lifestyle, and nutrition.
